Photo books are easier to create than ever but we know that getting started can be a bit overwhelming at times. Here are few ideas to help you get started.

Photo books are easier to create than ever but we know that getting started can be a bit overwhelming at times. Here are few ideas to help you get started:

Choose a Theme: Photo books are very versatile and can celebrate a specific person, event or time period. Deciding on a particular theme or time period in advance can help you focus your efforts. Would you like to create a book to highlight the current year? Is it a gift for Mom that includes favorite photos of your family, or is it a book to commemorate a special trip, vacation or award?

Mark Your Favorites: Most photo editing programs have a feature that allows you to mark, ‘star’ or select your favorite images. Grab a cup of coffee (or tea) and enjoy a stroll down memory lane as you scroll through your favorite images on the computer. Select the ones that fit your theme and mark them accordingly.

Simplify Choices: Unless you are creating a specific scrapbook effect, avoid using duplicate images or ones that are too similar in style and posing. Choose your favorites of each grouping and use those for the project. It will keep the layout interesting and varied and will also make things simpler for you!

Upload or Download: You can either upload all your images to our online store to create your photo book or you can download the images to a CD or jump drive and bring them to the store. If you feel you need a bit of extra help, come on by and we can help you get that project finished in no time flat!

Practice your photography with a field trip to beautiful Angel Island.

Travel Photography… It’s the details that create the story. Join Jillian Bell and Lew Held of Tamron at Shutterbug Camera for an hour packed with tips on how to capture better photographs on the road. Whether it is a family vacation, or a day trip into town, we’ll discover how to work around the crowds, frame better photographs, and create a complete story worthy of any album.

Sunday morning, meet up at the ferry in Tiburon for a 20-minute ride to Angel Island State Park where rocky coves, sandy beaches, historical buildings, and fantastic views await you. If you’re up for a hike, the Sunset Trail leads to Mt. Livermore where you’ll find a panoramic view of San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge. Not up for the climb? Try the 5-mile Perimeter Road loop where you can visit Camp Reynolds’ brick hospital built in 1908 and other historical buildings. Around to the East Garrison you may find harbor seals gathered at the point, and to the north along Perimeter Road is the Immigration Station, sometimes called “Ellis Island of the West”. Angel Island is also home to hawks, owls, gulls, egrets, blue herons, and brown pelicans.

Tamron will have lenses on hand for your use throughout the day, as well as an expert to answer your lens/photography questions and to give you more great tips.

$99.00 Registration Fee includes Travel Photography class at Shutterbug on Saturday June 9th (10am-noon), as well as the ferry ride, a picnic lunch, and use of Tamron lenses on Sunday June 10th.

If you’re starting out on a new photography venture in the hopes of turning a hobby into a career, make sure you have signed model releases for any images you use to promote yourself online or in print.

If you’re starting out on a new photography venture in the hopes of turning a hobby into a career, make sure you have signed model releases for any images you use to promote yourself online or in print. Too often beginning photography businesses use photos of friends or acquaintances for promotional purposes without making sure they have a model release signed and on file. This can lead to dicey legal situations later on down the line.

You can contact your local professional photography organization such as the PPA (Professional Photographers Association) or PMA (Photo Marketing Association). Also, The New York Institute of Photography posted a standard release for photographers to use as needed. You can find it here: http://www.nyip.com/ezine/techtips/model-release.html

Not only will a signed model release provide peace of mind, it will also stand as yet another signal that you have moved from a hobbyist to a working professional photographer!

When it comes to outdoor photography, the ability to control and manipulate light is key in creating a beautiful portrait. A quality reflector can solve many common problems associated with outdoor photography.

When it comes to outdoor photography, the ability to control and manipulate light is key in creating a beautiful portrait. While many of us simply trot our families outside with little more than some basic posing, the reality is that having an extra set of hands and a quality reflector can transform an outdoor sitting from average to amazing. A quality reflector can solve many common problems associated with outdoor photography.

A reflector can be used to diffuse harsh light on your subject and can also brighten dark areas in the image, particularly shadows that fall on the subjects’ faces. The reflector is simply held at different angles based upon the positioning of the available light (sun) and where it hits the subject. By moving the reflector slightly, you can add warmth and eliminate dark shadows.

Reflectors come in numerous shapes, sizes and colors. For example, a white reflector is a neutral and offers no color effect or adjustment whereas a gold reflector creates warmer tones and is often used to add a bit of color, or tanning effect, to the subject’s skin. By contrast, a blue reflector is designed to offer a cooler effect if there is too much yellow or warmth on a subject. The most common silver reflector is also neutral in color but will give a brighter effect than a standard white reflector.

Experimenting with a quality reflector can truly transform your outdoor photography. We have a fantastic five-in-one reflector designed to handle almost any situation.
